2D fashion themed cupcakes

i recently made this cupcakes for a pretty girl who is turning 7.  her mommy wanted the toppers to be 2D.  having limited cutters, i decided to check my cricut library cartridges and there it was!  the paisley cartridge :)

i was happy that i finally got to use my cricut cake, glad the machine was  not a waste after all :)

you want to roll your fondant to almost paper thin.  I used my pasta roller to have the uniform thinness.  grease your cricut  mat with shortening and let it freeze for about 30 minutes before using it.  and when done, make sure you have corn starch or powdered sugar handy when you take your toppers out from the mat.  you want to able to handle them on a well coated area because they can be really sticky.

it took me forever to finish the twenty toppers.  the freezing and cutting and resizing was really time consuming.  it was layer after layer of colors and patterns.

this is how they turned out...

Couch Tutorial

I recently made a cake for my friend JP.  My inspiration for the design was his wife's picture of him and his pretty baby girl sitting on the couch sleeping.  That was my first attempt but I failed :(.  Anyway, I made something that was pretty close though :)

Here is how I made the couch:

1.  Start with four rectangles of rice krispies.  I used the ones that are ready made.

2.  I used melted white chocolate to them together.

3.  Add another piece of rice krispy for the back support.  Roll two sausage-like treats for the arm rest.  And when happy with the pieces, use melted chocolate to glue them in.

4.  I wanted my couch to have more shape and definition.  I added some fondant for that purpose.  Adding and shaping fondant is easier that carving your rice krispies right? :)

5.  A thin layer of melted chocolate before covering it with fondant.

And here's it is!

Hope you like the tutorial :)

Happy Baking!

christmas giant cupcake

My friend, who also ordered my Christmas cupcakes, wanted a giant cupcake that will match the cupcakes she ordred.  And here is the result...

This was my first attempt on making a giant cupcake so please pardon the flaws.  I had to change the cake board three times.  My first one was a red and white swirl.  I thought it might be a nice touch but changed my mind right away because I felt the red was too strong and overwhelming.  I then covered my board with white only to see it the next morning with holes on it, thanks to my very curious daughter :)

Oh well! Christmas is now over.  I hope you all had a great one.  I will be making an outline of all the things I want to try and share with you all.  I hope you stick around and learn with me.

Have a great 2012!

christmas cupcakes

Hello everyone!

The past week, I have been busy making cupcake toppers for my friend.  I took some pictures but totally forgot to take step by step pictures on how I made the toppers.  If you have any questions, just email me here or on my facebook page.

Here is Santa Claus.  I used Virgin Ice red fondant, it sets really well without having to add tylose.

Gingerbread man.  For his color,  I added a little bit of white fondant with Satin Ice's chocolate brown fondant.  Again, no added tylose on these guys!

And here's the snowman.  All fondant and just added coarse sugar on the fondant plate to make it look like snow and to cover the white chocolate that I used as my glue.

I made Christmas trees too.  With my first batch of orders, I used buttercream, medium consistency, and Wilton tip #16.  I thought this method was going to save me a lot of time but it turned out to be more stressful since it is not as stable as fondant and gumpaste.  The above picture is the result of my buttercream Christmas tree.  It got ruined on our way to our friend's house.

Above is cupcakes set #1.  And below is cupcake set #2.

My gingerbread man ended up having three versions.  On this picture, he's got dallops of icing on both hands.  Picture below, he's holding a string of christmas lights.

With all these figures, all were made out of fondant expcept for the snowflakes.  They were fun to make but very time consuming.  Iactually missed spending time with my kids.
